Milky Gold Town

*Milky Gold Town* Did I get lucky or what! This past weekend I took Jeff Sullivans night workshop at Bodie Ghost Town, which allowed us to be in till 1am. Not only did we get the most insane sunset I have ever seen, but it cleared up for Milky way once it got dark. Perfect photographers weather if you ask me! This is a frame from my timelapse. Well the foreground shot which i lit with my flashlight I took after to get a better foreground shot. Star shot and timelapse specs: Canon 5D MK III Canon 17-40mm f/4 L ISO 6400 f/4 30 Seconds Foreground Shot: Canon 5D MK III Canon 17-40mm f/4 L ISO 3200 f/4 30 Seconds I masked the two shots together using photoshop and edited the shot with that and Lightroom 5. -Enjoy!

Bodie Traffic

Bodie Traffic This ghost town is too much. I was so use to the tiny Ghost Towns back in Aspen I had no idea there were huge ghost towns like this. The place is incredible to say the very least. While my other cameras were busy I decided to use the glow sticks I brought, to light this car up. It took me a bit to get the light how I wanted it, moved the sticks around a few times to get it just right. Then lit the foreground with a headlamp. I could have asked for better clouds for this shot either. I got tons more from Bodie, hopefully I get to them all soon!

Bonsai Trails

*Bonsai Trails* The past few days where pretty awesome. It started Saturday with a night workshop in Bodie Ghost Town with +Jeff Sullivan. Then I car camped just outside of Bodie to go back in morning when they opened. From there I decided to head to Lake Tahoe to go to Bonsai Rock, which has long been on my bucket list. I got there around 5:30 so I had plenty of time to kill. I still can't believe I carried my 4 bags, at once, down the steep hill to here! Was well worth it. So after kicking back and having a few beers I decided to set up. I shot sunset, which was decent and then waited for it to get a bit darker to start some more timelapses and do this star stack. *About This Shot* Canon 5D MK III Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II ISO 3200 f/2.8 25 Second Shots +Induro CT214 Tripod Getting a shot like this take lots of time and patience. In total it is 180 images stacked which mean it took around 126 minutes or 2 hours and 6 minutes. I then also took a 127 second shot to get a better foreground. Which still could be better in my opinion, next time! *Processing* I processed one of frames in Lightroom 5 and synced them all together. I then exported them as jpg's to a folder. I use a free program called StarStax (http://bit.ly/11f5YAT) I dragged the images to to program and clicked go. BUT WAIT, what about all those pesky plane trails! Alright this part sucked. I went into my folder of images and went through every single frame and highlighted it if I saw a plane trail, even meteors. Like this for example (http://cl.ly/image/3f0B1o1c2k28) This takes a bit of time but it was well worth it for the end result. After an hour of so of that nonsense, I re did the stack and was a lot happier. Now you probably have a shot with decent trails but a terrible foreground. I brought that 127 second shot I took, the new star trail shot and masked them together using photoshop. *Painting The Hawaiian Sky* Last night I met up with Dallas Nagata White and Tom Anderson in Hanauma Bay to shoot the stars and Milky Way. There were so many awesome things to shoot up in that area, it will definitely take me a while to digest all the shots I got. Here is one from the walk up, I guess I have decided to do a little self portrait series with my Goal Zero Flashlight. I can't get over the beam on this thing. Cole Yamane and I decided to stay out after Dallas and Tom went home. We even were up for sunrise, and then we crashed at 9am when we got home. — at Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve.

*Makapu'u Beach Milky Way* Tonight, Cole and I headed to Makapu'u Beach to shoot some stars and see if it was clear enough for the Milky Way. It sure was, at least when we got there it was, but then the clouds came in and mist hazed up the cove. Glad we got there when we did. — at Makapu'u.

Car Lights Over Sparks Lake Here is a frame from a timelapse I got up at Sparks Lake this past July. There is a little bit of the Aurora showing as well. I added a little blue to this, but was stuff for a while debating the white balance. The car lights over the lake are from Brad Goldpaint's buddy. Check out Brad's star photographs, he has some incredible Aurora shots from here the night before.

Aurora Trails - Sparks Lake, Oregon After seeing so many incredible images yesterday from the Aurora, I decided to take a little trip, a 18 hour trip that is! It was 1pm when I decided to go and was out the door by 2pm and on my way to Sparks Lake, Oregon. I definitely didn't plan to well, not that I had to much time to. Service wasn't great at all. When I got there I wasn't exactly sure where to go, so I took a road around the lake trying to find this shot. I got lucky and drove right to it, all at around 9:30pm. I got some shots just before it got really dark and then started to timelapse for a bit. I think I was a night late on the Aurora though. At least from the pictures I saw from the night before I was. I still got some pinks though. But not much you could see with the naked eye. But all the color was pretty much gone by midnight anyways. I am glad I got there when I did or I would have missed it all. I drove around to get some Milky Way reflections and then decided I got what I came for. Sleep in my car or drive was my question? 1:30am and I decided to hit the road. I was hoping to get somewhere interesting by sunset, maybe I should have stayed and got sunset at the lake :) Next time! But I was around Shasta Lake in Redding, CA for sunset and blue hour. And during blue hour it looked so surreal from the road. I took about 4 different exits, drove back and fourth and down all these random roads looking for somewhere to get a shot. I couldn't find anything at least not before the sun came up. So in disappointment I drove the rest of the way home and was in bed by 9am. That sure was a fun, quick little trip!
